چکیده

Two decades (2000–2019) of the landfast ice properties in Beaufort Sea region Canadian Arctic were analyzed at 250 m spatial resolution from two sources: (1) monthly maps derived Canada Centre for Remote Sensing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer clear-sky satellite image composites; and (2) Ice Service charts. Detailed comparisons have been conducted extent, water depth at, distance to outer seaward edge coast four sub-regions: Alaska coast; Barter Island Herschel Island; (3) Mackenzie Bay; (4) Richards Cape Bathurst. The results both sources demonstrate good agreement. average extent entire over April–June period is 48.5 (±5.0) × 10 3 km 2 data versus 45.1 (±6.1) used this study (7.0% difference). correlation coefficient 0.73 (p = 2.91 ?4 ). long-term linear trends since 2000 demonstrated statistically significant decline: ?4.45 (±1.69) /decade ?4.73 (±2.17) data, respectively. showed general tendency an earlier break-up, later onset, longer ice-free period. break-up date has decreased by 7.6 days/decade Bay region. western part area did not changes 2000.

MODIS Sea Ice Thickness and Open Water-Sea Ice Charts over the Barents and Kara Seas for Development and Validation of Sea Ice Products from Microwave Sensor Data

We have developed algorithms and procedures for calculating daily sea ice thickness (SIT) and open water–sea ice (OWSI) charts, based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), ice surface temperature (IST) (night-time only), and reflectance (R) swath data, respectively. The resolution of the SIT chart is 1 km and that of the OWSI chart is 250 m. The charts are targeted to be...

Atmospheric control of sea-ice thickness variability in the Amundsen Gulf, Canadian Beaufort Sea, and over the Labrador Shelf

Sea-ice thicknesses observed in Canadian coastal waters with helicopter-borne electromagnetic–laser sensors show large interannual variability caused by atmospheric fluctuations in two years for two areas where surveys were repeated, one in the Amundsen Gulf of the Canadian Beaufort Sea and one over the Labrador Shelf. For the Amundsen Gulf, the bimodal ice thickness peaks shifted by 40 cm to t...

Investigating Arctic Sea Ice Survivability in the Beaufort Sea

Arctic sea ice extent has continued to decline in recent years, and the fractional coverage of multi-year sea ice has decreased significantly during this period. The Beaufort Sea region has been the site of much of the loss of multi-year sea ice, and it continues to play a large role in the extinction of ice during the melt season. We present an analysis of the influence of satellite-derived ic...

Linking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...

Svalex 2005 and Icesar 2007 - Two Flight Campaigns over Sea and Land Ice in the Svalbard Region: Sea Ice Studies

Flight campaigns named SVALEX (Svalbard Experiment) and ICESAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar for Ice) were carried out over sea and land ice around Svalbard in winters 2005 and 2007, respectively. Here we report on the sea ice part of these campaigns. The objectives were to collect data for studying the effect of sea ice roughness on the atmospheric boundary layer, and for investigating the retriev...
